Intel Bringing Out Dual-Core Atom For Netbooks By June

Come June, we will be witnessing a positive flood of netbooks boasting dual-core Intel Atom processors. According to market sources, all the major companies are preparing to launch dual-core Atom-based netbooks in June and that includes the likes of Dell, Lenovo, HP and Asus. The last one already offers a dual-core netbook but that’s because that specific model uses an Atom that is meant for desktop nettop use.

The current dual-core atom processors are all meant for desktop systems where it is okay to use up more power. But when it comes to netbooks, you cannot cut down the battery life just to get more power. Hence, most of the netbooks so far have single core Atom chips in them. And this is what is going to change once June comes along.

This power upgrade is coming in at an opportune time indeed. A performance boost of this kind is exactly what the netbook segment needs to boost sales in the tablet era. Some of the zealots might disagree but the netbook segment is under threat from the multitude of tablets that are scheduled to come out later this year. And soon, there will be a situation where a lot of people, your average consumers, will be faced with the choice of buying a tablet or a netbook.

Knowing their needs, either would suit them well because a keyboard is not that necessary for most. Not everyone’s a blogger and most people do not write out tons of email everyday. So when faced with the choice, there is a possibility that the cool factor of a tablet while factoring in the portability will ultimately win over a lot of those people.

So in that scenario, if the netbook is suddenly deemed as being much more powerful than a tablet which will allow them to multi-task to a greater extent and have the laptop experience on a smaller footprint, the scales might tip over to the netbook side. There’s also the NVIDIA ION that can cause a hands down win for a lot but that has not become very popular amongst the manufacturers because it reduces the battery life thanks to the greater power consumption.

The announcement of the dual-core chip along with a lot of the dual-core toting netbooks are extremely likely to be found at this year’s Computex event. It ties in with that Paul Otellini had to say during Intel’s Q1 2010 earnings call conference.

Given this boost, the netbook category might see another rise in popularity this year. There will be competition from all sides though as tablets and netbooks with alternative chips trying to take bites out of the netbook user base. But there’s still a lot of development left for both camps and the first generation tablets especially are not likely to be very attractive to the general consumer. They surely do not have much hope given the way things stand with them right now with the iPad growing larger everyday.
